The penis size world map is fake, and it has been for fifteen years
One defunct crowd-sourced site, one number for Congo nobody can trace, and a race-science lineage nobody mentions. How a fabricated map became the internet's default fact.
You have seen it. Everyone has seen it. A world map, shaded from pale to dark, every one of the world's countries assigned an average penis size to two decimal places. It has been reposted for fifteen years, embedded in listicles, screenshotted into group chats, and cited in arguments as though it were an output of the World Health Organization.
It is not real.
I mean that quite precisely. Not "it is oversimplified." Not "it has some methodological weaknesses." The map that circulates, in its various reskins, traces back to a user-generated data-mapping site called TargetMap, where anybody could upload a spreadsheet and get a beautiful shaded map out of it. The site is gone. The map is immortal.
And the countries at the top of it — Congo at 17.93 cm, ahead of everything — rest on figures that nobody, in fifteen years of people trying, has been able to trace to a primary study.
How to fabricate a global dataset without lying once
The genius of the fake map, and I use the word bitterly, is that it did not require anyone to invent numbers out of thin air. It only required somebody to be indiscriminate.
Here is the recipe. Take the handful of countries that genuinely have clinician-measured studies — a couple of dozen, at most. Add every country where somebody once ran an online self-report poll. Add every country where a condom manufacturer published marketing research. Add figures lifted from a self-published book. For the remaining hundred-plus countries with no data of any kind, interpolate from a neighbour, or from a regional average, or from a theory about what the number ought to be.
Put all of it in one column. Round to two decimal places. Shade the map.
Two decimal places is the tell, incidentally. 17.93 cm implies a precision of a tenth of a millimetre across a national population. The largest and most careful meta-analysis in the field publishes its pooled estimate with a confidence interval nearly a centimetre wide. The fake map is more precise than the real science by a factor of about a hundred, which is exactly the confidence you can afford when nothing is constraining you.

The part nobody mentions when they repost it
Now the uncomfortable bit, and I am going to be direct, because dancing around it is how it survived this long.
The country ordering on that map is not random, and it did not come from nowhere. It reproduces, almost line for line, a claim from a specific and thoroughly discredited strand of twentieth-century race science: J. Philippe Rushton's "r–K life history" theory, which proposed that human populations could be ranked on a single axis running from brain size to sexual behaviour to genital size, with the ranking coming out — as these theories reliably do — in the order the author already believed in.
In 2013, Richard Lynn published a paper in *Personality and Individual Differences* explicitly testing Rushton's claim across 113 populations, and reported that it held. The data he used for that test was assembled from exactly the kind of sources described above: internet compilations, self-report, and self-published material, including work critics have shown to be untraceable. The paper has been dismantled on methodological grounds repeatedly — the central criticism being that you cannot confirm a hypothesis using a dataset that was itself assembled by people who held the hypothesis.
That is the lineage. A theory that ranked races, tested against numbers gathered by people who wanted the ranking, rendered as a friendly infographic, stripped of its citations, and reposted by millions of people who would be horrified to learn what they were sharing.
What the real coverage looks like
Here is the genuinely interesting thing, and the reason this article exists rather than just a correction.
When you go looking for national figures that meet a basic standard — a primary study, clinician-measured, one consistent metric, sample size and method reported — the world map does not go dark in the places you expect. It goes dark almost everywhere.
Several of the largest, wealthiest, most heavily researched countries on Earth have no usable published national figure for stretched length. Not because the research does not exist, but because what exists reports something else: flaccid and erect length without the stretched measurement, or a change measured before and after a surgical procedure, or a study of fifty men in one hospital.
That is the honest map. Two dozen countries shaded, the rest blank, and the blank is not ignorance about human bodies — it is the specific, boring absence of a specific, boring measurement, taken the same way, published with its method attached.
A blank map is a far better piece of science communication than a full one, and it will never go viral, because a blank map does not let anybody win.
The rule we ended up with
Building this game forced the question. A daily puzzle needs a country a day, and the temptation to pad the rotation out to something impressive was constant. Every skipped country is content we do not have.
The rule we landed on: countries get excluded, not estimated. If we cannot find the primary study, the country is not in the game. If a figure circulates widely but nobody can trace it to a source, it goes in labelled as exactly that — an untraced aggregate — rather than borrowing credibility from the rows around it.
That is why the rotation is a couple of dozen countries and not a hundred and ninety. It is the whole reason. And every time someone asks why their country is not in the game, the answer is the most boring sentence in science: because nobody has published the measurement.
The viral map answers that question differently. It answers it with a number.
A blank space on a map is a finding. Filling it in is a choice.
