The figure comes from Stewart et al., 2009, which measured 225 men. Method: bone-pressed, measured.

This study pressed the ruler into the pubic bone, which captures the buried portion of the shaft and records roughly a centimetre more than a study that rests the ruler on the skin — on the same man. A meaningful part of the distance between this row and the lower-ranked ones is that decision, not the populations.
